Embryo Transplantation

Embryo transplantation of Mammalian animal dated from the 1930s.Britain Cambridge University Heape has first completed rabbits embryos transfer, and proposed the possibility that the animal zygote could grow in the host parent uterus. Then embryo transfer in domestic animals has been succeeded that based on massive success of experimental animal zygotes transplantation, such as sheep in 1934, goat in 1974, pig in 1951, cattle in 1958, horse in 1973. After 1960s, the embryo transplantation technology has begun to enter the production and the commercialization along with some necessary technologies was consummate as superovulation, synchronization of estrus, embryo cryopreservation, embryo collection and transfer of non-surgical techniques.

The procedure of embryo transplantation of pig is that early embryos of sow which develop in the uterus or cultured in vitro are removed into another sow’s (recipient) oviduct or uterus that is treated at the same period, thereby make sure the embryos could continue developing in the body of the recipient. As mentioned above, the hand-made cloning embryos need implant into the uterus to grow continuously when they develop to a certain stage, because the cloning embryos are cultured in vitro. So the technology of embryo transplantation is the important element in the whole process of hand-made cloning.

The existing method of embryonic transplantation of pig is mainly adopted surgery. Out laboratory is using this method to transfer the hand-made cloning embryos, but at the same time we are researching other methods of embryo transplantation for reducing the pain of pigs.
