Several approaches have been developed by now for the production of transgenic animals, including DNA pronuclear injection, embryonic stem (ES) cells technology, sperm-mediated gene transfer, use of viral vectors and somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). Among methods described for transgenic animal production, SCNT is regarded as the most promising one. The main advantage of transgenesis by SCNT is that genetic modifications and transgene integration analysis could be performed in somatic cells prior to the birth of offspring. All cells of produced embryos will contain the transgene.
The pigs with human senile dementia genes which used SCNT and HMC technology were born in Denmark in August 2007.
