BGI Forms New Partnership with Three Universities in Turkey for Advancing Genomics and its Clinical Applications

June 17, 2013, Istanbul, Turkey, and Shenzhen, China - BGI today announces it has formed new partnership with Bogazici Univeristy, Acibadem University, and Cankiri Karatekin University, respectively. Mr. Qin Xu, Mayor of Shenzhen, China and Kadir Topbaş, Mayor of Istanbul together witnessed these strategic collaborations at a Sino-Turkey signing ceremony attended by numerous Chinese and Turkish universities, institutes and enterprises.

The ceremony was co-organized by Shenzhen government, a special administrative region of China, and Turkish government with the aim to improve the high-effective communication and  cooperation between Chinese and Turkish organizations in different areas, including life science, telecommunications, textile industry, among others.

Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU), BGI and Bogazici Univeristy will  collaborate on human genetics, plant and animal genomics and related genetics research. BGI and Acibadem University signed the agreement to collaborate on medical research and subsequent clinical applications for better improving the health of people. At the ceremony, BGI and Cankiri Karatekin University also jointly initiated an International Olive genome project.

“These collaborations will strengthen the productive relationship between Turkey and China. We expect these joint efforts can yield more achievements to benefit agriculture development and human health.” said, Mr. Qin Xu. Prior to the ceremony in Turkey, Mr. Xu visited BGI Europe in Copenhagen, and spoke highly of BGI’s efforts and achievements.

Mr.Ufuk Eren, Vice-President from Acibadem Heatlh Group, said, “We are very pleased to collaborate with BGI to strengthen our innovation in university and company. One of the main focus on this collaboration is to promote our initiative skills and the joint Ph.D. education programme. We are very proud to work as a partner with such internationally acclaimed organization. We believe in the future we will bring this joint achievements to benefit more and more people in the whole regions, including Turkey, middle east and south Europe regions.
