BGI Attends the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation to Show its Support for Cooperation

From September 3 to 4, the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China -Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) was held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China. Dr. Wang Jian, President of BGI, was invited to attend the FOCAC, Dr. Wang Ren, Senior Vice President of BGI accompanied him at the summit. At the same time, the BGI representatives also participated in the Conference of China and African Entrepreneurs and had in-depth discussions with representatives from African enterprises.

President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech titled “Work Together for Common Development and a Shared Future” at the opening ceremony of FOCAC and announced that China will implement eight major initiatives with African countries in the next three years and beyond. Among the eight major initiatives, health care initiative will cover medical and health aid programs for Africa, particularly flagship projects such as the headquarters of the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention, programs on the prevention and control of emerging and re-emerging communicable diseases. The industry promotion initiative will carry out agricultural assistance programs and send senior agricultural experts to Africa to train young Africans in agri-science and entrepreneurs in agri-business. All these plans are also BGI’s main focus and direction to explore the cooperation with African countries based on BGI’s technological advantages.
President Xi Jinping also delivered a keynote speech themed "walk together towards prosperity", at the opening ceremony of High-level Dialogue Between Chinese and African Leaders and Business Representatives as well as Sixth Conference of Chinese and African Entrepreneurs. He urged entrepreneurs to seize this historic opportunity for innovation, learn from each other and create new ways to cooperate. Entrepreneurs should also shoulder social responsibility, respect local cultural customs and serve as a bridge for China-Africa friendship in the process of economic cooperation.
During the on-site media exclusive interview, Dr. Wang Ren said that President Xi’s speech will encourage China’s enterprises to go global and progress steadily. BGI will conscientiously promote the China-Africa industrial and innovative cooperation and proactively take the social responsibilities.
During the summit, Dr. Wang Jian was invited to join the China-Africa CEO High-level Dialogue, hosted by China Chamber of International Commerce to exchange views on the implementation of the China-Africa Summit consensus and the expansion of cooperation. During the meeting, BGI, World Health Organization (WHO) and China CDC reached a consensus on the cooperation under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
With the vision of “Omics for All”, BGI has always been exploring pragmatic cooperation with African countries. Dr. Wang Jian told the reporter from Shenzhen Satellite TV station that BGI can do more in public health to build the China-Africa shared future community. “We have the capability and are willing to bring more scientific and industrial development to Africa and support China to become the true friend of Africa.”
Up to now, BGI has built cooperation relationship with medical and research institutions in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ethiopian, Kenya, Nigeria among others in joint research, public health, agriculture, and marine fisheries, and other fields. After the summit, Dr. Wang Jian made important deployments for BGI’s peoples’ livelihood projects in Africa. Under the new spirit mentioned by President Xi, BGI will deepen the cooperation and benefit more African people with its advanced capabilities of life sciences, biotechnology, and gene technology.
