BGI Delegation Visits Sri Lanka to Discuss All-Round Cooperation

On June 6, 2018, BGI delegation led by Mr. Duncan Yu, Executive Vice President of BGI met Hon. Dr. Sarath Amunugama, M.P., Minister of Science, Technology, and Research; Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, M.P., Minister of Agriculture, and Hon. Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, M.P., Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, during their visit to Sri Lanka. In line with Belt and Road initiative, both sides had an in-depth discussion on all-round cooperation in the areas of research, agriculture, prevention of birth defects, precision medicine and prevention, and control of infectious diseases.
Hon. Dr. Sarath Amunugama, M.P., Minister of Science, Technology, and Research expressed interest to collaborate with BGI in the field of life science and technology. The two sides also discussed opportunities for cooperation in science and technology parks and platform construction.
 
Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, M.P., Minister of Agriculture paid close attention to the industrial layout of BGI Millet, BGI Marine, and BGI’s stereoscopic agriculture. He hopes to cooperate with BGI in molecular breeding, platform construction, stereoscopic agriculture and other aspects.
 
Hon. Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, M.P., Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine highly endorsed the BGI proposal on prevention and control of thalassemia and birth defects and invited BGI to participate in screening and research projects of thalassemia in Sri Lanka.
 
 
This was a reciprocal visit came after a Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, Sri Lankan Ambassador to China visit to BGI and China National GeneBank (CNGB) in May this year. The visit of BGI delegation to Sri Lanka will further strengthen the bilateral cooperation.
Mr. Jeremy Cao, General Manager of Asia Pacific region of BGI Genomics; Mr. Chen Songheng, Director of International Corporation Social Responsibility of BGI Genomics; Mr. Trevor Lu, and Ms. Tharshany Rajasingham, Business Development Managers of BGI International Planning & Development Center; Mr. Han Shengping, Project Manager of International Cooperation Department at CNGB; Mr. Charles Li, Regional Manager of South Asia of BGI Genomics and Ms. Sitian Xu, Coordinator, International Business of BGI Agro also participated in the meeting.
