Budapest, Hungary – University of Debrecen (UD), Hungary and BGI Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding, Tuesday 20th June, regarding cooperation on the establishment of a local NGS sequencing hub for local population cohort studies and diagnostic testing, and wider collaboration in the research and development of genetic and genomic sciences.
The MOU was signed by Prof Dr Bartha Elek, Deputy Rector of Education, UD, and Dr. Ning Li, Chief Development Officer of BGI Group Community on Precision Medicine. The signing took place during the CEEC-China Health Ministers’ Meeting, Budapest, Hungary, which aims to facilitate greater cooperation, knowledge sharing and investment in the field of public health. The conference itself can be seen in the context of China’s Belt - Road initiative, which aims to foster economic development along the old Silk Road linking it to Europe. Also, BGI Group has built close ties with countries and regions along ‘the Belt and Road’ such as Laos and South Africa in the fields of scientific research, industrial development and people’s livelihood.
According to the agreement, UD and BGI Group will establish joint scientific and innovation research proposals, joint R&D projects and work together developing national and international research and innovation projects. UD and BGI Group will also explore the possibility of establishing a sequencing hub for local population cohort studies and diagnostic testing. The lab will be staffed by UD, with BGI Group providing its sequencing expertise for the successful establishment of the laboratory, and sequencing platforms and ongoing support for the operation of the laboratory.
The University of Debrecen, as a leading and prominent institution of Hungarian higher education and in line with the spirit of the Magna Charta of European Universities, is dedicated to developing and improving universal scholarship and Hungarian society by providing high-quality, versatile and interdisciplinary educational as well as research and development programs. The main focus of the UD’s activities is directed at the health industry. UD has established a center for clinical genomics and personalized medicine, and many of its research groups are involved in genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic research and development.
