Bioinformatics Intern

The Bioinformatics teamsat BGI are responsible for developing innovative and scalable data analysis solutions to extract biological meaning from next generation genomic data. They implement innovative methods which transform sequencing results into discoveries and clinical insight to improve patient care.


BGI is looking for a quick learning, detail-oriented student to be the next intern in a high-performing, fast-paced team at an amazing organization. With experts in software engineering, bioinformatics and program management, we focus on developing and applying technology tools and techniques to empower decision-making and accelerate the discovery in translational research. 



Main duties

  • Perform informatics analysis for high-throughput sequencing genome databases, and conduct algorithm research and data mining.
  • Evaluate and apply existing analysis tools and procedures.
  • Investigate, develop, and optimize new methods, processes and software packages for bioinformatics analysis.
  • Communicate progress and challenges within the BGI community.


  • Students must be enrolled in Master's or PhD level program in computer science, mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology, or related  scientific discipline
  • Minimum GPA of 3.2
  • Experience developing novel inference/machine-learning models and/or algorithms
  • Experience in software development using C++/C#/Java or similar
  • Knowledge of software engineering tools, such as source control and automated testing, is strongly desired
  • Ability to proactively explore new techniques and construct creative solutions to overcome current limitations and achieve project goals
  • Able to work independently and manage time across multiple concurrent projects
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and a strong work ethic are essential. Fluent communication skills in Mandarin preferred
  • Training or research experience in genomics, population genetics or cancer preferred
  • Experience with next generation sequencing platforms and data preferred
  • Ability to complete 10-12 consecutive weeks between May and September

Software Development Intern

BGI is looking for a quick learning, detail-oriented student to be the next intern in a high-performing, fast-paced team at an amazing organization. With experts in software engineering, bioinformatics and program management, we focus on developing and applying technology tools and techniques to empower decision-making and accelerate the discovery in translational research. 


The successful applicant will have a strong interest in software development and optimization, coding and image algorithm processing. This position will assist the team to complete the software deliverables for equipment and work close with the hardware development team. 


Main duties

  • Design user interface software for biomedical instruments.
  • Participate in core module development in architectural design, coding, and quality assurance.
  • Engage in software development for medical devices following industry standards.
  • Improve the software function of existing products and enhance their operational performances.



  • Students must be a junior in a Bachelor's degree program, or above, in Bioengineering, Computer Science, Computer Eineering, Biological Sciences, Electronic Engineering or related areas. 
  • Minimum GPA of 3.2
  • Problem solving experience individually and in a team environment.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • C#, Python, Java, or Object Oriented Language experience preferred (specific to role)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English is essential, and fluent communication skills in Mandarin preferred
  • Ability to complete 10-12 consecutive weeks between May and September
