BGI-Agro was founded in 2010. It is a comprehensive scientific research center including plants, animals, microbes and marine organisms areas.
BGI-Agro is well equipped with facilities applicable for various biological breeding needs. BGI-Agro has over 200 employees.
BGI-Agro makes full use of BGI’s world-leading genomic and bioinformatics technology to promote biological industry development.

Focused Areas

Based on whole genome molecular breeding technology and genetic engineering technology, BGI-Agro carrries out genomics guided plant germplasms development and application, plant variety improvement and modern agriculture industrialization promotion. BGI-Agro has work through the bottleneck of conventional breeding and achieved a fast, controllable and high-efficient breeding model.

Plants

Based on whole genome molecular breeding technology and genetic engineering  technology, BGI-Agro carrries out genomics guided plant germplasms development and application, plant variety improvement and modern agriculture industrialization promotion.

Animals

Conduct animal breeding and animal model of human disease research with genomics, transgenic and hand-made cloning technology to improve breeding efficiency and human health.

Microbe

Based on genomics technology and National Gene library-Microbial Unit, the platform focuses on high throughput screening (HTS) of microbial strains/genes and exploring values of these microbial bio-bricks in fields of energy, environment, health and food industry, etc.

Marine Life

BGI-Agro is  working on aquaculture and molecular marker-assisted breeding, microbes, medicine, pest control, biodiversity conservation, environmental protection and ecological improvement.

Laboratory Qualification

BGI-Agro has four high-throughput technical platforms: transgenic platform, whole-genome molecular breeding platform, animal handmade cloning platform and Marine organism platform. BGI-Agro has a national key laboratory, a ministerial key laboratory, a provincial key laboratory and four municipal key laboratories. BGI-Agro has established in-depth collaboration with International Rice Research Institute, International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and other world famous agricultural institutions. BGI-Agro has published 6 agriculture-related papers in the journal of Nature and its series.
